A study published in JAMA Neurology looked at a potential association between risk of intracranial hemorrhage and first time use of SSRIs. The UK study looked at data comprising over 1 million patients.
The study also compared SSRIs with tricyclic antidepressants, and examined whether or not anti-thrombotics modified the risk of hemorrhage.
SSRI use was associated with an increased risk of hemorrhage compared with tricyclics. Moreover, the risk was greatest in the first 30 days of use, and the relative risk was increased by anti-thrombotics.
